It’s Derby Day! Time to break out your fancy hat and best bottle of bourbon! Since no Kentucky Derby viewing party would be complete without a refreshing mint julep, here’s my go-to recipe for the big day:
Ingredients:
- Kentucky bourbon
- Crushed ice
- Mint leaves
- Simple syrup*
- Water
Directions:
- Muddle mint leaves and 2 Tbsp. simple syrup in mint julep cup
- Add a splash of water and fill 3/4 of cup with crushed ice
- Add bourbon
- Top with more crushed ice and garnish with mint leaves
*Simple syrup is incredibly easy to make:
- Bring 1/2 cup brown sugar and 1/2 cup water to a boil, stirring constantly
- As soon as sugar has dissolved, immediately remove from heat
- Add fresh mint leaves and let cool
- After mixture has cooled, remove mint leaves and store in refrigerator until ready to use
