Classy Cocktails: Mint Julep Recipe

Mint Julep

It’s Derby Day! Time to break out your fancy hat and best bottle of bourbon! Since no Kentucky Derby viewing party would be complete without a refreshing mint julep, here’s my go-to recipe for the big day:

  • Kentucky bourbon
  • Crushed ice
  • Mint leaves
  • Simple syrup*
  • Water

  1. Muddle mint leaves and 2 Tbsp. simple syrup in mint julep cup
  2. Add a splash of water and fill 3/4 of cup with crushed ice
  3. Add bourbon
  4. Top with more crushed ice and garnish with mint leaves

*Simple syrup is incredibly easy to make:

  1. Bring 1/2 cup brown sugar and 1/2 cup water to a boil, stirring constantly
  2. As soon as sugar has dissolved, immediately remove from heat
  3. Add fresh mint leaves and let cool
  4. After mixture has cooled, remove mint leaves and store in refrigerator until ready to use
